History
Yaakov Moshe (Jacob) Unfanger, was born in Sydney, Australia and spent his youth in Israel. When he moved back to Australia with his wife and growing family, he saw the need for a kosher butcher business to serve the flourishing Jewish community in Melbourne. In 1978, he bought the Kew Kosher Butchers which became the first kosher butcher store in Australia to offer fresh meat, chicken, and veal in a display case.
In the mid 80's, Yaakov Moshe closed Kew Kosher Butchers and bought the Melbourne Kosher Butcher store in Balaclava where in addition to the poultry, beef, and lamb, he started producing his own cold cuts and sausages. He expanded his business and moved into a bigger store several years later. This new and current location is 251 Inkerman Street, St. Kilda, Melbourne.
In 1995, Yaakov Moshe added on a new location when he bought out Meal Mart and began manufacturing pies and cooked products. Later in 2006, he expanded the production to include cooked schnitzels, stir fries, etc.
Yaakov Moshe is still active on a daily basis in the business where he even does his own cooking, sausage making, and sales. He is literally “the face” of the business and arrives at work in the middle of the night every single working day. He explains, “I learned from my father that you have to work hard for your money.”
However busy he is, Yaakov Moshe takes time to smile at each child who comes in the store, and he presents every single one of them with a fresh sausage. Throughout the school year, he gladly takes school children for tours around his factory and plant.

Melbourne Kosher Butchers is a family-owned business that has been operating for the last 45 years, with over 20 employees at both its plant and retail outlet.
OUR POULTRY
Our chickens, turkeys and ducks meet our high criterion for freshness and tastiness, and they are specifically grown for us at a number of farms throughout Victoria. Our poultry is processed in our fully kosher production facility.
OUR BEEF, LAMB, AND VEAL
Our beef, lamb, and veal are all pasture fed and raised on a grass diet. We hand select them from farms throughout Victoria, and our experienced staff prepares them using their skill and expertise.
RETAIL
Our retail shop is the hub of our business. The motto of Melbourne Kosher Butchers is: “The Place You Like to Meat.” MKB shop staff and family members are available to serve our customers the more than 250 various products for sale.
We are known for the cleanliness and presentation of our products in the shop, but our excellent service is what our customers rave about.
We have a large range of fresh, vacuum-packed, and frozen products. Come in and try our delicious meat, sausage, and potato pies, our barbecued chickens, freshly cooked schnitzels, blintzes, rice pilafs, stir-fry vegetables, and so much more foods that are ready to go.
WHOLESALE
We offer our full range of products for sale to local customers and those throughout Australia, including restaurants, caterers, grocery stores, schools, and old age homes. No order is too big or small. We are happy to fill all orders to the best of our ability.
